The Power of Observation

Slowing Down to Heal & Find Joy

Have you ever taken a moment to simply observe? To pause, stop doing, and pay attention to the world around you and within you?

People-watching is one of my mum’s favourite hobbies. If it was an Olympic sport, she’d win hands down. Doesn’t matter where we are, she loves to take a seat in a coffee shop & observe the people both inside & outside.

It’s a skill that, when applied to our own lives, can be transformative. We can learn a lot from observing. Stopping the ‘doing’. Slowing down long enough to pay attention to what’s going on around us & inside us.

Here’s how embracing the role of the observer has been a powerful tool for healing and joy in my life.

The healing power of observation

One of the most profound steps in my healing journey has been learning to observe my own behavior.

When I take the time to notice my actions, I can catch myself in habits that no longer serve me, like reaching for a chocolate bar whenever I feel… well, anything. Observing doesn’t mean judging; it means creating space to recognise what’s happening and responding with intention.

Through observation, I’ve learned to self-soothe and replace old patterns with healthier ones. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.

Finding joy in the small things

Slowing down and observing is about finding joy in life’s simple wonders.

For example, I love watching my family fern grow. Seeing its green fronds unfurl, witnessing life literally unfolding in front of me, brings a deep sense of peace and connection.

When we pause to notice these “little” things, we realise they’re not so little after all. They’re moments of beauty and magic that we might otherwise miss in the rush of daily life.

Why slowing down matters

For anyone who has an active brain like me (neuro-spicy or not), slowing down can feel counterintuitive. We’re used to being busy…doing…thinking.

But giving ourselves permission to pause, even just momentarily, can be incredibly grounding. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and the world around us.

How to practice observation

You don’t need hours to experience the benefits of slowing down and observing. Here are a few simple ways to incorporate this practice into your week:

  1. Take a minute to breathe
Sit quietly, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Notice how your body feels in the moment.

  2. People-watch
Whether you’re at a coffee shop or waiting in line, take a moment to observe the people around you. What stories might their expressions or actions tell?

  3. Notice nature
Spend a few moments outside, watching the trees sway or the clouds drift. Let yourself marvel at the beauty of life simply unfolding.

  4. Reflect
At the end of the day, take a moment to think about your behaviors. What patterns are serving you? What small change might you make tomorrow?

What will you observe this week?

Observation is a simple but powerful tool for healing, self-awareness, and joy. This week, I challenge you to take even one minute to pause and observe, whether it’s your surroundings, your habits, or the small wonders of life.

What will you notice when you slow down? Share your thoughts in the comments! I’d love to hear about your experience. 💚🌱
