Lessons Learned from a Decade in Social Media Community Management
I never thought I’d stick to anything for more than 10 years! My ADHD, entrepreneurial brain loves a challenge, to keep things fresh… I’m like a magpie with shiny new objects. So it was utterly remarkable to my Past Self & so fun for “2024 Sarah” to celebrate 12 years since my first SMCM client!
If you’ve been in your field for 10+ years, you’ll know it’s not just about sticking with something, it’s about adapting, evolving, and finding joy along the way. Here’s what’s kept me going and thriving in social media community management for all these years.
Building lasting long-term relationships
At the heart of my work are the relationships I’ve built with amazing clients and brands. Relationships are my passion, both professionally and personally. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with lovely humans and working on incredible brands in industries like FMCG, fashion, health and wellness, and retail.
These connections have been the foundation of my career, and they remind me daily why I love what I do.
Adapting to change
The social media landscape is in constant flux: new platforms emerge, algorithms change, and user behaviours evolve. Staying ahead means adapting quickly and offering services that meet clients’ needs today, not yesterday.
When I started, social media management was simpler. Now, strategy plays a much bigger role, and I thrive on using my experience to provide unique insights and solve complex challenges.
Moving with how my industry (social media/ technology/ marketing) changes
Oh Meta…!
It’s a running joke in my team that things just change without any warning or logical reason. And if you’ve worked in social media, you know how unpredictable it can be. But instead of resisting change, we embrace it. Staying nimble and creative is key to navigating these shifts, and it keeps us on our toes for sure!
Building a Team
In the early years, I wore all the hats: strategist, designer, writer, and more. But doing everything alone became isolating and exhausting. When I finally came round to the idea that I can’t & don’t want to learn, know & do everything, my business and joy completely transformed.
Now, I delegate tasks outside my Zone of Genius, allowing me to focus on what I do best while empowering my team to shine in their areas of expertise.
So I love that I’m surrounded by people who are absolutely brilliant, both at what they do & as humans.
Prioritising fulfillment beyond work
This is so important & often gets overlooked. Work is not the whole of life. Neither is socialising. The blend - as my pal Tina Boden would say - is what truly brings us happiness. I’m currently loving spending time with my baby nephew & prioritising family time & working on creative projects, which bring me so much joy.
Finding joy outside of work has made me a better leader and a more fulfilled person.
