A Leaky Toilet and a Lesson in Community
Sometimes, life has a funny way of reminding us about the things that matter most. Just the other day, I found myself dealing with a sudden household emergency: a leaking toilet that soaked the entire bathroom carpet. In the middle of calling my landlord, the plumber, and friends for advice, I was reminded of something so simple yet profound: community is everything.
We often take for granted the networks of support around us, but moments like these highlight just how crucial it is to have people you can turn to in times of need. Whether it’s an emergency, a challenge, or a celebration, the strength of our community really can make all the difference.
The Role of Community in Business and Social Media
The word ‘community’ is embedded in what I do every day. Community has been a central theme throughout my career. As someone who works in social media and online community management, I see firsthand the power of building and nurturing supportive spaces.
Lately, my team has been shifting our focus toward private, engaged groups rather than traditional public-facing content (we do this too, though!). Whether it’s a Facebook group, a membership platform, or a private online forum, these spaces allow businesses to truly connect with and support their clients.
Why online communities matter for business:
They create a sense of belonging for customers
Members can share experiences and support each other
Businesses can receive direct feedback on products and services
A strong community leads to loyalty and advocacy
Having a dedicated online space for your customers means they have somewhere to ask questions, celebrate wins, and engage with like-minded people. Whether they’re navigating a big life transition (like becoming a new parent or going through menopause) or simply looking for inspiration, an online community provides them with that essential support.
Community beyond business
The importance of community extends way beyond business. It’s a crucial part of personal well-being. In my own life, I’ve built a strong support system, including my coach, therapist, family, and friends.
A coach once asked me, “How do you know when to ask for help?” My answer? I don’t always have to, because I’ve already cultivated the support I need. By maintaining regular conversations with my support network, I never feel like I’m asking for too much when I need help; they’re already aware of what’s going on in my life.
The 2 key times you need community the most:
During challenges and difficult times – when life feels overwhelming, community offers strength and reassurance.
During moments of joy and success – it’s just as important to have people who will celebrate your wins with you!
The people around us shape our experiences. Having a strong community means you’re never alone in your struggles or your celebrations.
Finding and building your own community
I’m involved in so many different communities, each reflecting a different part of my personality and hobbies. From the gym and dancing to spirituality and business, these communities enrich my life in countless ways.
If you don’t have a strong community yet, here are some ways to start building one:
Join online groups related to your interests or industry
Engage in local meetups or networking events
Create a support system by regularly checking in with friends and mentors
Start your own community if you can’t find one that fits your needs
